Phil first started playing guitar at the age of 14,learning jazz ,classical and rock styles buying his first drum machine and four tracker soon after.Hearing dance music at the end of the 80's made phil think that a fusion between dance music and rock could be possible.Under the name Anatomy,Phil played regulary at Club Dog at the Robey and at the Rocket in London.Forming Cubanate later with Graham Rayner in 1992 led to a meeting at a Cubanate gig in London with Marc Heal.Marc joined the band soon after.
Cubanate was known for its early fusion of metal guitars and techno with industrial electronics and vocals. The first Cubanate album Antimatter was recorded in two weeks and after this Cubanate played their first UK tour in November 1992 with Sheep On Drugs. In May 1994,the "Metal" EP was Single of the Week in Melody Maker magazine. Later that year Cubanate received media attention when they were wierdly paired with heavy metal band Carcass for what turned out to be a notoriously violent UK tour ending in death threats to the band and an on-air confrontation on the Radio One Rock Show with Bruce Dickinson. "Body Burn" and "Oxyacetylene" were both Single of the Week in UK rock weekly Kerrang! ;as well as in NME and Melody maker .The'Bodyburn' video had regular late night MTV showings. The second album 'Cyberia'produced the hit tune 'Oxyacetylene' which was used as the lead track on the Video game 'Gran Turisimo'.The track found its way on to the soundtrck album of the film 'Mortal Kombat'The third album 'Barbarossa' was released in 1996 and was followed by the bands first headline tour of America. Many more tours followed playing with such acts as Gary Numan,Sisters of Mercy,Front 242,Front line assembly and playing several festivals around europe . The fourth and final album , 'Interference' was a departure from the earlier techno records with a strong drum and bass influence .
