Biography Luke Nicholson
Two years following the release of his Satellites EP, Genie nominated singer/songwriter Luke Nicholson has already put the finishing touches on his new album, Mad Love. Appropriately beginning with a song entitled
"We all Need" which he describes as an ode to the power of love. " It's crazy when you get older how you come to realize how trivial life truly is, everyone no matter their circumstance needs something or someone to love, its that simple" says Nicholson "This entire album is a collection of songs that take the listener inside my life, both artistically and physically" "I went through so much personal and professional turmoil over the last few years and it was this album, which got me through it, becoming in the process incredibly cathartic"
Luke Nicholson's voice, and songwriting caught the attention of Roger Tavassos (while playing his successful Tuesday night residency at the legendary Cameron house in Toronto), and led to a producing partnership for Mad Love. On previous albums (Separate Notes, Satellites) Nicholson put his music in other peoples hands to shape and mold. "Records I made in the past were great experiences but I was still growing up as an artist when I recorded them, there was a naivete on my part that allowed people around me to get their stamp on things" "I wanted to make an album that pushed me creatively, but still captured who I was " says Nicholson " I was afraid of over production for this record, and Roger made it immediately clear he wanted to preserve the integrity of the songs”
Mad Love also gave the opportunity for another first. " I had never co-written a song with anyone in my life" says Nicholson "But as we started to track this album and really break down each song, I reached out to musicians I respect, what came out of that collaboration were some of my favorite songs on the record" Mad Love was a group project in every sense of the word, involving Paul James Rogue studio, Joao Carvello's Revolution, and Brent Brodrug's Sly-Fi Chapel "We recorded all over Ontario, from Kingston to Guelph, to Toronto, so many musicians, so much love from so many people" says Nicholson "I am very lucky to be friends with some incredibly talented people in this business, and many lent a hand. (like Juno nominee Royal Wood, renowned trumpeter/ producer William Sperandei and Juno winner Adam King)
Luke Nicholson's career has span the last 15 years, but it wasn't until recently his hard work started to pay off. " It's crazy you start out with a guitar, and a few friends making music, next thing you know you have amassed a career" says Nicholson "however, after Satellites I decided to be smarter about it, I've put the work in slowly through word of mouth, residencies, college and CBC radio play, festivals like NXNE and solid song writing..now it was time to do the record I wanted" Not that his last record was without accomplishments. His singles "Breathe" "Satellites" and " Holiday" have charted in the top ten on several college stations across Canada, been in rotation on commercial radio, and featured on CBC's Here and Now. "Breathe" and "Alone in Space" earned placement in the film Poor Boys Game (staring Danny Glover and Rossiff Sutherland), earning him a Best Original Song nomination at the Genies. "The Genie nomination came out of nowhere, I didn't have the right team in place, and was still finding my voice as an artist, but it was a huge learning experience none the less" says Nicholson. With the release of his latest album to date Mad Love, and a national tour in the works, a solid support staff around him, this artist is finally all grown up and taking that next step.
