Biography Vitold Rek

Vitold Rek, born 18. Oktober 1955 in Rzeszów, Poland as Witold E. Szczurek and living in Germany is a Jazz double-bass player.

Vitold Rek studied classical double-bass in the Music Academy of Krakau. Since 1975 he has played with important polish Jazz musicians as Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, Jan Jarczyk, Sławomir Kulpowicz, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Vladislav Sendecki or Tomasz Stańko. In the late 1980ies, Rek moved to Germany where he was took part various in live performances and recordings with many other European Jazz artists.

His playing stile reflects his Jazz background, as well as his classical training. In the last years, he has turned more award to east European folklore: In his most important work, Polish Folk Explosion, Rek fuses traditional folk music with European Free-Jazz.

Currently, Rek is playing together with the accordion player Jarosław Bester and the percussionist Ramesh Shotham in the Jazz formation East West Wind. Vitold Rek is also teaching Jazz double-bass in the conservatoria in Mainz and Frankfurt am Main. His official page can be found under www.jazzpages.com/VitoldRek/.
