Biography

François Carrier (* 5 June 1961 in Chicoutimi, Québec) is a Canadian musician (soprano and alto saxophone) and composer in the field of modern creative and improvised music.

Carrier has been active in the Canadian jazz scene since the 1980s; since 2000 he has worked in a trio with percussionist Michel Lambert and bassist Pierre Côté. His album Compassion (Naxos Jazz) won the Juno Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2001. In 2002 he performed with pianist Bobo Stenson at the Vancouver Jazz Festival and recorded an album with Uri Caine. In 2003 he recorded the album Travelling Lights (Justin Time), accompanied by Paul Bley, Gary Peacock and Michel Lambert. Other productions followed, including productions with Mat Maneri, Dewey Redman, Michel Donato, Ron Séguin and Véronique Dubois. In 2011 the trio album Inner Spire (Leo) with drummer Michel Lambert and Russian pianist Alexei Lapin was released in St. Petersburg.
