History
Deichkind
Deichkind is a German band formed in Hamburg in 1999. Initially comprising MC Malte, Philipp, Buddy, and producer Sebi, the group's sound evolved significantly over the years. DJ Phono has been a consistent presence, supporting the band during live performances.
Early Years and Hip Hop Roots
The band first gained attention in 2000 with their hip hop debut album, Bitte ziehen Sie durch. This was followed by Noch fünf Minuten, Mutti in 2002. In 2005, Deichkind participated in the Bundesvision Song Contest, representing Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and finishing 14th.
Shift to Techrap and Memorable Performances
Following MC Malte's departure in the summer of 2005, Deichkind began to focus more on a genre they termed "techrap," a fusion of techno and rap. Their 2006 album, Aufstand in Schlaraffenland, featured iconic live performances characterized by elaborate costumes made from duct tape, foil, lights, and inflatable toys. The track "Remmidemmi (Yippie! Yippie! Yeah!)" became an anthem for German party culture, depicting a house party spiraling out of control.
A particularly notable performance occurred at the Melt! festival in 2006, where the band invited over 400 fans onstage to join them for "Remmidemmi."
Tragedy and Resurgence
In April 2008, Buddy left the band to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Ferris Hilton, also known as Ferris MC. The band faced a significant loss with the death of producer Sebastian "Sebi" Hackert on February 21, 2009, at the age of 32. This event cast uncertainty on the future of Deichkind.
However, the band regrouped and returned in 2012 with the album Befehl Von Ganz Unten. The singles "Leider Geil" and "Bück Dich Hoch" achieved chart success in Germany. Three years later, they released their subsequent album, Niveau Weshalb Warum.
