History

D12: Detroit's Iconic Hip-Hop Collective

D12, an abbreviation for The Dirty Dozen, emerged from Detroit, Michigan, in 1996, establishing themselves as a prominent force in American hip-hop. The group's foundational lineup featured prominent artists including Eminem, Proof, Bizarre, Kon Artis, Kuniva, and Swifty McVay.

Commercial Acclaim and Chart Success

The early 2000s marked a period of significant mainstream breakthrough for D12. Their albums Devil's Night (2001) and D12 World (2004) achieved widespread commercial success, yielding hit singles such as "Shit on You," "Purple Pills," "Fight Music," "My Band," and "How Come." Both of these seminal albums were certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. In recognition of their impact, the group was honored with the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Act in 2004.

Evolving Lineup and Later Years

Following Eminem's hiatus from the group and the tragic death of Proof in 2006, D12's activity saw a notable decrease. Despite this, between 2008 and 2015, the remaining members, primarily Bizarre, Kuniva, and Swifty McVay, released three official mixtapes. During this period, Eminem made occasional contributions, alongside former member Kon Artis (also known as Mr. Porter) and 1990s affiliate Fuzz Scoota.

Official Disbandment and Continued Legacies

The official dissolution of D12 was signaled by Eminem on August 31, 2018, with the release of his tenth studio album, Kamikaze. The track "Stepping Stone" explicitly addressed the group's disbandment, marking his departure. However, Bizarre, Kuniva, and Swifty McVay have continued to perform and release music under the D12 name, carrying forward the group's legacy.
