Sergei Rachmaninoff: Composer, Pianist, and Conductor

Sergei Rachmaninoff (born April 1, 1873, O.S. March 20 – died March 28, 1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor renowned for his profound musicality and virtuosic performances.

A Virtuoso Pianist

Widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his era, Rachmaninoff possessed legendary technical skill and a powerful rhythmic drive. His exceptionally large hands allowed him to span an interval of a thirteenth on the keyboard, a span of approximately twelve inches. His prowess was captured on numerous recordings made by the Victor Talking Machine Company, featuring both his own compositions and standard repertoire pieces. He is consistently ranked among the most accomplished pianists of the 20th century.

Evolving Reputation as a Composer

Rachmaninoff's standing as a composer has seen a notable evolution since his death. While early critical assessments, such as the dismissive 1954 edition of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, characterized his music as "monotonous in texture... consisting mainly of artificial and gushing tunes," this view has been largely superseded. In fact, his popularity among both musicians and audiences has grown significantly in the latter half of the 20th century. His symphonies, orchestral works, songs, and choral music are now recognized as masterpieces, standing alongside his more frequently performed piano works.

Notable Compositions and Influences

Rachmaninoff's compositional output includes four piano concerti, three symphonies, two piano sonatas, and three operas. He also composed the choral symphony The Bells, based on Edgar Allan Poe's poem, and the unaccompanied choral work All-Night Vigil, often referred to as Rachmaninoff's Vespers. Other significant pieces include the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, 24 Preludes (featuring the iconic Prelude in C-sharp minor), 17 Études-tableaux, and the Symphonic Dances. His extensive song catalog includes the famous wordless Vocalise.

His musical style is firmly rooted in the late Romantic tradition, drawing comparisons to Tchaikovsky, with clear influences from Chopin and Liszt. Rachmaninoff also found inspiration in the works of Balakirev, Mussorgsky, Medtner (whom he considered the preeminent contemporary composer), and Henselt.
