Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (March 21, 1839 – March 28, 1881) was a Russian composer and a member of the group known as "The Five." He was a significant innovator in Russian music, dedicated to forging a distinct Russian musical identity that often challenged the conventions of Western classical music.

Mussorgsky drew inspiration from Russian history, folklore, and nationalist themes for many of his most celebrated works. These include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain, and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. While his music frequently evokes vivid nationalistic imagery, it also contains elements that question authority and express anti-militaristic sentiments, as heard in pieces like The Field-Marshal.
