History

Cara Dillon, born July 21, 1975, in Dungiven, County Derry, Northern Ireland, is an acclaimed Irish folk singer. She embarked on her solo career in the UK in 2001 with the release of her self-titled debut album, Cara Dillon. Before establishing her solo career, Dillon was a member of the folk groups Óige and Equation. She, along with Sam Lakeman (her husband since 2002), departed from Equation to sign with Blanco y Negro Records under the moniker 'Polar Star,' although no recordings under this name were released.

Her debut album, Cara Dillon, released in 2001, featured a blend of traditional songs and two original compositions. The album earned her the Best Newcomer award and the Best Song award for 'Black is the Colour' at the 2002 Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Dillon continued her recording career with her second album, Sweet Liberty, released in 2003, followed by her third album, After the Morning, in 2006.

In January 2008, Dillon and her band recorded a live DVD, The Redcastle Sessions, in County Donegal. This led to an extensive tour that spanned from May through the folk festival season into the winter of 2008/9, with performances across Ireland, Great Britain, and the USA. During this period, guitarist John Smith was introduced as a duet partner on the single 'If I Prove False.' This single, along with her fourth album Hill of Thieves (released January 26, 2009), marked Dillon's transition to her independent label, Charcoal Records.
