George Frideric Handel
George Frideric Handel (born Georg Friedrich Händel on February 23, 1685, in Halle an der Saale, Germany; died April 14, 1759) was a preeminent composer of the Baroque era, celebrated for his contributions to concerti grossi, operas, and oratorios. Though German by birth, Handel spent the majority of his adult life in England, officially becoming a British subject by Act of Parliament in 1727, and is known by his Anglicized name in the English-speaking world.
His most renowned work is the oratorio Messiah, a monumental piece set to texts drawn from the King James Bible. Among his other widely recognized compositions are the orchestral suites Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. Handel's prolific output and innovative style significantly influenced subsequent generations of composers, including luminaries such as Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. His work played a crucial role in bridging the Baroque period with the emerging Classical era.
