Tyla Laura Seethal (born January 30, 2002), known mononymously as Tyla, is a South African singer and songwriter recognized for her distinctive blend of pop and amapiano. This unique sound has earned her the moniker "Queen of Popiano" from various media outlets. She achieved global acclaim with the 2023 release of her single "Water," which charted in the top ten across several countries, including her native South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Born and raised in Johannesburg, Tyla signed with Epic Records in 2021, building on the domestic success of her 2019 debut single, "Getting Late." Her track "Water" marked a significant milestone, becoming the first song by a South African solo artist in 55 years to enter the US Billboard Hot 100. The song also secured the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance.
Debut Album and Accolades
The success of "Water" preceded the release of Tyla's self-titled debut album in 2024. The album garnered critical praise and achieved moderate commercial success, charting within the top 25 in multiple territories, including the United States. At a young age, Tyla became the youngest African artist in history to win a Grammy Award.
