History

Melissa Vivianne Jefferson, professionally known as Lizzo, was born on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan. An American rapper, singer, and songwriter, Lizzo's musical journey began in her youth, influenced by both gospel music and secular artists like Stevie Wonder and Elton John. Her family's move to Houston, Texas, exposed her to the emerging Southern music scene, including chopped and screwed rap and polished R&B, which inspired her to start writing music at a young age.

Early Musical Explorations

Lizzo's formative years were marked by a diverse range of musical experiences. She was involved in various R&B girl groups, progressive rock bands, and electro-pop duos. In 2011, she relocated to Minneapolis to immerse herself in the city's vibrant music community.

The Chalice and Debut Album

In Minneapolis, Lizzo formed the all-female rap/R&B group The Chalice with Sophia Eris and Claire de Lune. Their 2012 album, "We Are The Chalice," achieved significant local success, earning them critical acclaim. Following the dissolution of The Chalice and a period of creative block, Lizzo found inspiration in Lazerbeak's instrumental mixtape "LAVA BANGERS." This led to a collaboration with Lazerbeak and Ryan Olson, resulting in her debut album, "Lizzobangers," released in 2013. The album showcased her eclectic influences and experimental production.

Sophomore Release and Growing Recognition

In 2015, Lizzo released her second album, "Big Grrrl Small World," further establishing her unique artistic voice and continuing to blend various musical styles.
