History

Saigon Kick emerged as a harmonic hard rock band, skillfully navigating the line between their core rock sound and alternative sensibilities without alienating their established fanbase. The group aimed to be a band for the thoughtful listener, characterized by intelligent and provocative lyrical content.

Formation and Debut

Formed in Miami, Florida, the original lineup consisted of Matt Kramer on vocals, Jason Bieler on guitar, Tom DeFile on bass, and Phil Varone on drums. The band cultivated a dedicated following within their home state before securing a record deal with Atlantic Records. Their self-titled debut album was recorded in an impressively short eleven days. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the album initially failed to gain significant traction with the public.

Breakthrough and Lineup Changes

The band achieved widespread recognition with their hit single "Love Is On The Way," a ballad that reached #12 on the charts, from their album The Lizard. While this success introduced Saigon Kick to a much larger audience, it also led some to mistakenly categorize them as a one-hit wonder. Following this period of success, bassist Tom DeFile departed and was replaced by Chris McLernon. Before the recording of their next album, Water, Matt Kramer also left the band, prompting Jason Bieler to take over vocal duties.

Later Years and Solo Endeavors

Although Water proved to be a commercial disappointment in the United States, Saigon Kick maintained a loyal fanbase internationally. The band recorded two more studio albums before ultimately disbanding. Jason Bieler went on to form the band Super Transatlantic. Notably, the original Saigon Kick lineup, minus Bieler, reunited for select live performances with Jeff Blando on guitar. Phil Varone later joined Skid Row as their drummer for their 2003 comeback, while Matt Kramer pursued a solo career. The band has continued to perform sporadically over the years.
