The Great Unraveling emerged in 1995, formed nine months after the dissolution of the band Universal Order of Armageddon. The group was founded by bassist Anthony Scott Malat, guitarist and vocalist Tonie Joy, and drummer Randy Davis.
While the band retained elements of Universal Order of Armageddon's forward-thinking hardcore sound, The Great Unraveling developed a distinct "power trio-esque" sonic identity. Their music explored unconventional and driving time signatures, notably propelled by Anthony Malat's bass playing, which drew comparisons to figures like Chris Squire of Yes and Paul Simonon of The Clash.
