Absolutely Fabulous: The Musical Legacy of a BBC Hit

The iconic BBC television series Absolutely Fabulous, celebrated for its sharp wit and unforgettable characters, also left a notable mark on the music charts. While the show featured a selection of classic tracks, including Lulu's "The Boat That I Row," The Animals' "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place," and Suzi Quatro's "Can The Can" and "Devil Gate Drive," its most significant musical contributions came from original productions inspired by the series itself.

Chart Success Driven by Dialogue and Dance

The show's theme song, a memorable rework of Julie Driscoll's "This Wheel's On Fire," set the stage for its unique sonic identity. However, it was two original singles that truly captured the public's imagination, blending spoken-word excerpts from the series with new vocal performances over contemporary dance beats.

The first of these, the self-titled single "Absolutely Fabulous" by the group of the same name, achieved considerable success in the UK charts. This track featured additional dialogue recorded by star Jennifer Saunders, while the production was helmed by the Pet Shop Boys. They ingeniously incorporated snippets from the show's first series as the core inspiration for the song.

Following this success, the second single, "I Am Thin & Gorgeous," adopted a similar formula. Produced by Junior Vasquez, the track again combined dialogue from the show with infectious dance rhythms, further cementing the connection between Absolutely Fabulous and the music scene.

The Stars and the Show

Absolutely Fabulous starred Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Jane Horrocks, Julia Sawalha, and June Whitfield. The series also attracted a glittering array of guest stars, including Emma Bunton, Elton John, Marianne Faithfull, and Lulu, contributing to its widespread appeal both in the UK and internationally, including a warm reception in the United States.
