Tanya Donelly, born July 14, 1966, in Newport, Rhode Island, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Based in New England, she played a pivotal role in the formation of the alternative rock band Throwing Muses alongside her stepsister Kristin Hersh. Her musical journey continued through the 1990s with significant contributions to The Breeders and the highly successful band Belly.
Donelly first gained wider recognition as a co-founder of Throwing Muses. Her career trajectory then led her to The Breeders and subsequently to Belly, where she served as lead vocalist and primary songwriter. It was with Belly that Donelly achieved critical and commercial success in the mid-1990s, earning a Grammy nomination. The band's composition "Feed the Tree" became a national hit, enjoying extensive airplay on radio and music television. Belly released music on labels such as Sire/Reprise Records and 4AD.
