History

Mynta

Mynta is a Swedish-Indian musical ensemble formed in 1979, known for forging a unique genre that blends traditional Indian music with Nordic jazz influences. The group has consistently produced music that respects the integrity of its root sounds while creating something entirely new, defining a distinct approach to world music by drawing from centuries-old musical traditions.

Core Members and Influences

The ensemble is prominently led by Indian virtuosos Fazal Qureshi on tabla and Shankar Mahadevan on vocals. Both are accomplished musicians within the classical Indian tradition, having performed globally with renowned artists such as Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shivkumar Sharma, and Zakir Hussain. Fazal Qureshi is the younger brother of Zakir Hussain, a member of John McLaughlin's pioneering fusion group Shakti, which was instrumental in early European fusion music.

Swedish Musical Contributions

Representing the Swedish contingent are seasoned musicians from the Swedish music scene: Santiago Jimenez on violin, Max Åhman on guitar, Ola Bothzén on percussion, and Christian Paulin on bass. These musicians infuse Mynta's sound with a Nordic sensibility, adding a cool jazz feel to the ensemble's distinctive fusion.

Critical Acclaim

Mynta has earned respect in the global music community for their consistent delivery of honest and refreshing music. John Baxter of Option magazine lauded the group's expansive musical vision, highlighting the "electrifying percussion grooves" laid down by Qureshi and Mikael Nilsson, and Max Åhman's guitar work, which pays tribute to John McLaughlin's speed and skill. Baxter also noted the exotic instrumentation, including the Swedish hammered dulcimer, Indian santoor and tanpura, and the North African saz, describing Mynta as an "exotic sort of orchestra" and a prime example of Scandinavia's contribution to fascinating world fusion.
