History

The Sonora Pine

The Sonora Pine was an American indie rock band formed in New York City in 1994. The group was initially founded by Tara Jane O'Neil, who had recently relocated from Louisville after the dissolution of the math rock band Rodan. O'Neil, a vocalist and guitarist, also formed the rootsy indie pop duo Retsin around the same time.

Formation and Early Years

O'Neil's primary collaborator in The Sonora Pine was guitarist Sean Meadows, formerly of Lungfish and a member of June of 44. The duo soon expanded their lineup with the addition of violinist Samara Lubelski. After performing a series of shows in New York, the band took a break to focus on other projects.

Debut Album and Evolving Sound

The Sonora Pine reconvened in Louisville, recruiting drummer Kevin Coultas, who had also played with Rodan. This lineup recorded the band's self-titled debut album, released in 1996 on Quarterstick. The record showcased elements of Rodan's experimental sound but was characterized by a gentler, folk-pop-influenced chamber ambience. The album also featured guest piano from Rachel Grimes of the post-rock ensemble Rachel's. Critics often positioned The Sonora Pine's music as a blend between the orchestrated arrangements of Rachel's and the angular math rock of Rodan and June of 44.

Second Album and Disbandment

Following the departure of Sean Meadows, The Sonora Pine continued as a trio. Their music evolved, becoming quieter and more subtle, with a reduced emphasis on rock elements. Their second and final album, titled II, was released in 1997. After the album's release, the band members pursued individual musical paths. Tara Jane O'Neil returned to Retsin and subsequently launched a solo career in 2000.
