History
We Are Scientists
We Are Scientists is an American indie rock band formed in Claremont, California, in 2000. The current lineup features Keith Murray (guitar and lead vocals), Chris Cain (bass guitar and backing vocals), Max Hart (keyboards and guitar), and Andy Burrows (drums). Original drummer Michael Tapper departed the band in 2007.
Origins and Name
The band's name originated from a humorous encounter with a U-Haul employee. While inspecting a rented van, the employee, mistaking the bespectacled band members for scientists, asked if they were. Despite clarifying they were musicians, the band members later expressed a playful regret for not embracing the scientist persona.
Musical Journey
We Are Scientists gained early recognition through self-released EPs, including "Bitching!", "Safety", and "Fun, and Learning (In That Order)". Their debut full-length album, With Love And Squalor, was released on Virgin Records and featured singles such as "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt," "The Great Escape," and "It's A Hit." The album title was inspired by J.D. Salinger's short story "For Esme - With Love and Squalor."
Following their debut, the band released Crap Attack, a compilation of B-sides and rarities. Their second studio album, Brain Thrust Mastery, was released in the UK in March 2008, reaching number 11 on the album charts.
In November 2007, it was reported that Michael Tapper had amicably left the band. Shortly before, in September 2007, Max Hart joined as a temporary keyboardist and guitarist. The band's third album, Barbara, was released in June 2010 and included contributions from drummer Andy Burrows.
Cultural Impact
We Are Scientists' music was featured on the soundtrack for the 2008 film Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. Notably, former drummer Michael Tapper's band, Bishop Allen, made a cameo appearance in the same film.
