Nubiyan Twist
Nubiyan Twist is a vibrant musical collective known for their energetic fusion of groove-driven music. Orchestrated by guitarist and producer Tom Excell, the band crafts a distinctive and infectious sound that draws from a rich tapestry of genres including jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat, Latin, soul, reggae, and dance music.
A Dynamic Ensemble
At the heart of Nubiyan Twist's sound is a powerful horn section, complemented by the soulful vocals and MCing of Nubiya Brandon. The ensemble also features live electronics, turntablism, and an explosive rhythm section with influences stretching from Brazil to the UK. This dynamic combination of virtuosic musicians, skilled producers, and inspired composers creates a unique sonic landscape.
Live Performances
The 10-piece live show is a captivating experience, featuring a four-piece horn section, two vocalists, electronics, and an international rhythm section. Their performances are renowned for their power and ability to create an unforgettable atmosphere, having graced stages at major festivals like Glastonbury, Shambala, Boomtown, and the Edinburgh Jazz Festival. They were also selected by David Byrne to perform at the Queen Elizabeth Hall for the Southbank Centre's Meltdown festival and have sold out London's iconic Jazz Cafe.
Discography and Recognition
Nubiyan Twist's debut album garnered significant acclaim across the jazz, world, and hip-hop press, receiving support from prominent figures and publications such as Huey Morgan, David Rodigan, Craig Charles, The Independent, Songlines, Afropunk, and SBTV. This was followed by the release of their album Siren Song in May 2016, and a rework of Supercat's "Dance Inna New York" in 2017. Their subsequent studio album was released on Strut Records in October 2018.
