Jesse Malin: A New York Rock Veteran's Solo Journey

Jesse Malin, born in January 1968 in New York City, has carved out a significant career in American music, beginning his performing journey in the 1980s. His early years were marked by his role as the frontman for the influential New York hardcore band Heart Attack. Following this, Malin became the original vocalist for the 90s punk and hard rock group D Generation. After D Generation disbanded in 1999, he formed the alternative rock band Bellvue before embarking on a solo career.

Solo Debut and Early Success

Malin's solo work draws inspiration from artists such as Paul Westerberg, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. His transition to a solo artist gained momentum when his longtime friend Ryan Adams, impressed by Malin's songwriting, offered to produce his debut album. This collaboration resulted in The Fine Art of Self Destruction, recorded in less than a week and released in January 2003. The album was supported by extensive touring across the United States and the United Kingdom.

Continued Artistic Evolution

His subsequent solo releases include The Heat in June 2004 and Glitter in the Gutter in March 2007. In 2010, Malin formed Jesse Malin & the St. Mark's Social, releasing the album Love It To Life. The album's title was inspired by a quote from Joe Strummer. Featuring a more rock-oriented sound, singles from the album included "Burning The Bowery" and "All The Way From Moscow." Love It To Life was lauded by Paste Magazine as "the best album of his career."

Collaborations and Band Reunions

In December 2010, Malin collaborated with members of Green Day to form the band Rodeo Queens, releasing the song and video "Depression Times." D Generation reunited in 2011 and continues to perform live. A notable later release was the critically acclaimed 2019 album Sunset Kids, a collaboration with Lucinda Williams and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day.
