At The Gates Launches Full-Album Animated Movie For New Record

A Visual Monument to Tomas Lindberg

Swedish Death Metal pioneers At the Gates, who formed in 1990, have unveiled a massive conceptual visual storyline to accompany their eighth studio album, "The Ghost Of A Future Dead." The project was created by longtime collaborator Costin Chioreanu of Twilight 13 Media, who handled the painting, filming, editing, and production of the animated movie. The film enhances the music and lyrics of the entire album, following the previous release of individual videos for the tracks "The Dissonant Void" and "In Dark Distortion."

Chioreanu described the project as a deeply personal undertaking and a monument to the band's late vocalist, who passed away in September 2025. The visual artist noted that the intensity of the album pushed him beyond his previous professional limits.

"This is by far the most intense project I've done, not only due the circumstances but also because the album is so intense and it requires an insane rhythm for the whole dynamic. It is also the first time that I am doing a full album art video and, honestly, I think it will remain singular of this kind in my career, as I've been over several of my limits with this one. But I am so happy that I could finish this monument for my friend Tomas and for his magical band, who will remain with my heart and my memory till the end of my time here and beyond."

Recording the Final Legacy

The album was released worldwide on April 24, 2026, via Century Media Records, more than two years after it was completed in the studio. In an interview with Finland's Chaoszine, bassist Jonas Björler reflected on the final months of Lindberg’s life and the urgency to complete his vocal tracks. Lindberg was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare oral cancer, in December 2023, which necessitated an invasive surgery that removed a large portion of the roof of his mouth.

According to Björler, the vocal takes used for the final album were recorded in a single day, just before Lindberg underwent surgery, to ensure the record could be completed regardless of his recovery path.

"We entered the studio and started recording the music [for 'The Ghost Of A Future Dead'] when Tomas actually had his first surgery. And he managed to sing all the vocal demos for all the songs. So that's what we used for the album… He did good versions or good takes in a studio in Gothenburg before the surgery. So, that was done in, like, December [of 2023] or January [of 2024], and we entered the studio in February [of 2024]."

Lindberg himself had prepared a message regarding the recording process in March 2025, which the band shared posthumously. He emphasized that the album was a return to the band's roots, blending the styles of their previous works.

"The last version of the vocals, the ones that will end up on the album, were recorded in ONE day, mostly one takes, the DAY before the surgery, just to make sure we HAD the album, so to speak. So the vocals were actually recorded BEFORE the rest of the album.... a bit different, but it felt good to have it done."

Chart-Topping Success and Future Honors

"The Ghost Of A Future Dead" achieved significant commercial success upon its release, making history for the band in their home country. In May 2026, the record reached No. 1 on the official Swedish album chart, marking the first time the group has ever topped the main chart. Additionally, the LP landed at No. 1 on the Swedish physical, vinyl, and hard rock charts. The album was recorded and mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, with artwork provided by Robert Samsonowitz.

The band's musical legacy will soon be celebrated by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in a special event titled "The Gothenburg Sound." Scheduled for December 3, 4, and 5 at the Gothenburg Concert Hall, the event will feature symphonic interpretations of iconic At The Gates songs alongside material from In Flames and Dark Tranquillity.

While the band is currently focused on the album's release, Jonas Björler mentioned that celebratory shows for Lindberg remain a possibility for the future.

"Yeah, we haven't really discussed those things because we're gonna release the album first and then we'll see. Maybe some shows to celebrate him or something, but we are not sure about anything right now."

The lineup for the album features Lindberg on vocals, Adrian Erlandsson on drums, Jonas Björler on bass, and the guitar duo of Martin Larsson and Anders Björler, the latter of whom rejoined the band three years ago.
