History

Loreena McKennitt, born February 17, 1957, in Morden, Manitoba, Canada, is a Canadian musician, composer, harpist, accordionist, and pianist. She is known for her world music compositions, which often feature Celtic and Middle Eastern influences. McKennitt operates independently as her own manager, producer, and head of her record label, Quinlan Road.

Over a recording career spanning three decades, McKennitt's distinctive "eclectic Celtic" sound has garnered international critical acclaim and achieved significant sales, with gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certifications in fifteen countries across four continents. Her 1997 album, The Book of Secrets, proved to be her most successful, yielding the hit single "The Mummers' Dance," which found unexpected popularity on American Top 40 and alternative rock radio.

Musical Style and Influences

McKennitt's music is characterized by a fusion of world music with folk, Celtic, and Mediterranean elements. She incorporates a diverse range of instruments, including the hurdy-gurdy, qanun, uilleann pipes, Turkish clarinet, bouzouki, and nyckelharpa, alongside more traditional instruments such as guitar, drums, bass, harp, piano, and accordion – the latter three being instruments she herself plays.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in Morden, Manitoba, McKennitt relocated to Stratford, Ontario, in 1981, where she continues to reside. Her artistic journey included acting and singing roles, as well as composing music for productions at the Stratford Festival of Canada, from 1982's The Tempest to 2001's The Merchant of Venice.

Her recording career commenced in 1985 with the release of her debut album, Elemental. In the early days of her label, Quinlan Road, McKennitt managed its operations from her home, selling recordings through mail order and organizing her own national concert tours. Today, Quinlan Road's music is distributed globally by major labels including Warner Music and Universal Music, as well as independent distributors.
