Known for his distinct, melodic vocal style and ability to blend R&B, hip-hop, and West African influences, he became one of the most prominent figures in global pop music during the 2000s.

Akon rose to international prominence in 2004 following the release of his debut studio album, Trouble. The project was fueled by the success of the singles "Locked Up" and "Lonely," which established him as a major new voice in the industry. His follow-up album, Konvicted (2006), further elevated his career, earning him a Grammy Award nomination for the hit single "Smack That," featuring Eminem.
