History

Olubowale Victor Akintimehin Folarin, known professionally as Wale, is an American rapper and songwriter who rose to prominence by bridging the gap between Washington, D.C.’s local go-go scene and mainstream hip-hop. Born on September 21, 1984, in Washington, D.C., to Nigerian immigrant parents, Wale’s music is characterized by its lyrical complexity and the frequent use of live percussion and soulful samples.

Early Life and Education

Wale spent his early years in Northwest D.C. before moving to Largo, Maryland, as a teenager. A standout athlete, he attended several high schools, eventually graduating from Quince Orchard High School in 2001. He attended Robert Morris College and Virginia State University on football scholarships before transferring to Bowie State University. In 2004, he decided to leave university to pursue a career in music full-time, working various retail jobs while building his reputation in the local rap scene.

Career Beginnings and Local Buzz

Wale’s entry into the music industry began with local radio play in 2004. His single "Rhyme of the Century" caught the attention of Source magazine, which featured him in its "Unsigned Hype" column in 2005. His early mixtapes, such as Paint a Picture, helped establish his "street-smart" persona and technical rapping ability.

By 2006, Wale had become a fixture in the D.C. metro area, winning "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" at the WKYS Go-Go Awards. His growing influence led to high-profile performances, including an appearance on the Southern Invasion tour alongside Lil Wayne and T.I. at the Verizon Center.

The Allido Records Era and Interscope Debut

In 2007, Wale’s career reached a turning point when producer Mark Ronson heard his single "Good Girls." Ronson signed Wale to a production deal with Allido Records, leading to international exposure. During this time, Wale released the mixtape 100 Miles & Running and performed his track "W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E." at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.

Wale signed a major label deal with Interscope Records in 2008. His debut studio album, Attention Deficit, was released on November 10, 2009. While the album received critical praise for its diverse production and guest appearances, Wale eventually moved on to a new phase of his career by joining Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group (MMG) in early 2011.

Success with Maybach Music Group

Wale’s tenure with MMG marked his most commercially successful period. He released three consecutive high-charting albums under the label:

Throughout his career, Wale has maintained a reputation as one of the most consistent lyricists in hip-hop, frequently collaborating with major artists across genres while remaining a vocal ambassador for the culture and sounds of Washington, D.C.
