Machine Gun Kelly: A Genre-Bending Artist

Colson Baker, widely known as Machine Gun Kelly (mgk), is a multifaceted American artist born on April 22, 1990, in Ohio. He has carved a unique niche in the music industry, adeptly navigating the spaces between alternative rock and hip hop. His career began with the release of four mixtapes between 2007 and 2010, leading to his signing with Bad Boy Records.

Early Success and Musical Evolution

mgk's debut studio album, Lace Up, arrived in 2012, reaching number four on the US Billboard 200 and featuring his breakthrough hit "Wild Boy" (featuring Waka Flocka Flame). He continued to build commercial momentum with his subsequent albums, General Admission (2015) and bloom (2017). The latter included the chart-topping single "Bad Things" with Camila Cabello, which climbed to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2019 album, Hotel Diablo, showcased a return to his rap-rock roots.

The Pop-Punk Pivot and Mainstream Dominance

In 2020, mgk made a significant stylistic shift with his fifth album, Tickets To My Downfall. This release marked a definitive departure from hip hop, embracing the pop-punk genre. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming the only rock album to achieve this feat that year. It featured the popular single "my ex's best friend" (with blackbear), which peaked at number 20 on the Hot 100. His 2022 follow-up, mainstream sellout, continued this successful trajectory.

Acting Career

Beyond his music, mgk has also established a presence in film. He made his acting debut in the 2014 romantic drama Beyond the Lights. His notable film roles since include appearances in the techno-thriller Nerve (2016), the horror film Bird Box (2018), the comedy Big Time Adolescence, and portraying Tommy Lee in the 2019 biopic The Dirt.
