Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, the hip-hop duo $uicideboy$ emerged in 2014, formed by cousins Ruby da Cherry and $crim$. They gained significant traction on the music-sharing platform SoundCloud, recognized for their distinctive sound characterized by abrasive, self-produced beats and candid lyrical content. Their themes frequently explore substance use disorder and suicidal ideation, establishing them as prominent figures in the underground rap scene. The duo independently manages their music releases through their own label, G*59 Records.
The music of $uicideboy$ spans various sub-genres of rap. While some tracks adopt a melancholic tone, delving into subjects like depression and suicidal thoughts—topics rarely addressed in mainstream rap—others exhibit a raw aggression, touching on themes of violence and sexuality. Their upbringing in New Orleans heavily influences their work, with song titles such as "Audubon," "Tulane," "Elysian Fields," and "St. Bernard" referencing streets and neighborhoods significant to their formative years. A substantial portion of their discography focuses on the complexities of depression, a perspective less common in mainstream hip-hop. Ruby da Cherry has described their music as a form of therapy, stating in an interview with Mass Appeal, "A lot of people take it as emo, or depressed music, or negative music... it’s really just connecting. It’s therapy, through music." With rare exceptions for guest producers, all of $uicideboy$'s music is self-produced, primarily by $crim$ under his pseudonym Budd Dwyer.
