History
JPEGMAFIA: Experimental Hip-Hop Innovator
Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks (born October 22, 1989), known professionally as JPEGMAFIA, is an American rapper and producer celebrated for his distinctive experimental hip-hop sound. Though born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, to Jamaican parents, Hendricks spent formative years in Baltimore, Maryland, a city that significantly influenced his artistic output. He is currently based in Los Angeles, California.
Early Life and Military Service
Hendricks' early life was marked by a move to Alabama at age 13, where he experienced racism that would later inform his music. After relocating to Louisiana, he enlisted in the United States Air Force at 18. His military service included a tour in Iraq and postings in Kuwait, Germany, Japan, and North Africa, culminating in an honorable discharge. While he initially claimed a master's degree in journalism, Hendricks later clarified he had studied the subject during his deployment but did not receive a formal degree. In 2021, he revealed on social media a history of childhood abuse.
Musical Beginnings and Evolution
Hendricks' interest in music production began at age 15, sparked by learning to sample. He described his early beats as initially unappealing to others, which led him to rapping. He views himself as primarily a producer who also raps, taking both roles seriously. His music is often categorized as experimental hip-hop, but it fluidly incorporates elements of trap, R&B, and noise rap. Hendricks has cited Kanye West as a major influence, alongside artists like Ol' Dirty Bastard, MF DOOM, Björk, and Janelle Monáe, among many others.
Career Milestones
After his military service, Hendricks produced and wrote music in Japan under the name Devon Hendryx. Upon moving to Baltimore in 2015, he adopted the moniker JPEGMAFIA. That year, he released the mixtapes Communist Slow Jams and Darkskin Manson, the latter inspired by the Freddie Gray protests in Baltimore.
His debut studio album, Black Ben Carson, was released in February 2016 through Deathbomb Arc, featuring a notably harsh and distorted sound. This was followed by a collaborative EP, The 2nd Amendment, with Freaky. In January 2018, after relocating to Los Angeles, he released his second studio album, Veteran. Described as his most experimental work at the time, the album garnered widespread critical acclaim for its unconventional approach.
Hendricks' third studio album, All My Heroes Are Cornballs, was released in September 2019 to further critical praise and marked his first album to chart. He supported the album with the JPEGMAFIA Type Tour. In 2020, he released several singles compiled into the EP EP!, followed by EP2! in early 2021. His fourth studio album, LP!, was released on his birthday, October 22, 2021.
Collaborations and Recent Work
In January 2023, JPEGMAFIA announced plans for multiple album releases, including a highly anticipated collaborative project with rapper Danny Brown. This collaboration, titled SCARING THE HOES, was officially announced in February 2023 and released on March 24, 2023, preceded by singles like "Lean Beef Patty."
On August 1st, 2024, Hendricks released his fifth studio album, I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU, which included the singles "Don't Rely On Other Men" and "SIN MIEDO." The album's release followed the preview of the song "Don't put anything on the bible" on his Instagram.
