History
Juli is a German pop-rock band formed in Gießen, Hesse. The group's current lineup, featuring singer Eva Briegel, guitarists Jonas Pfetzing and Simon Triebel, bassist Andreas “Dedi” Herde, and drummer Marcel Römer, has remained consistent since 2000. The band's name translates to "July" in English.
Early Years and Breakthrough
Originally known as Sunnyglade in the 1990s, the band initially performed in English. In 2002, they adopted the name Juli and began writing and performing in German. Their debut single, "Perfekte Welle" (Perfect Wave), was released on June 28, 2004. The song achieved significant success, reaching number two on the German Top 100 charts and remaining there for six months. Their first album, Es ist Juli, followed in August 2004, peaking at number two and staying in the German charts until July 2006.
Impact and "Perfekte Welle" Controversy
Alongside bands like Wir sind Helden and Silbermond, Juli emerged as one of the prominent German pop acts of 2004, contributing to the resurgence of German-language songs on the music charts. In late December 2004, "Perfekte Welle" faced a ban from radio and television stations following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Despite the song's metaphorical meaning—describing seizing an opportunity—the lyrics, particularly lines about water and the "perfect wave," were deemed sensitive in the wake of the disaster. Critics noted the disconnect between the song's intent and the stations' reaction.
Subsequent Releases
The band released their second album, Ein Neuer Tag (A New Day), in October 2006.
