History

Elvis Crespo, born July 30, 1971, in New York City, is a Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rican-American merengue singer. Named in honor of Elvis Presley, Crespo relocated to Caguas, Puerto Rico, with his mother during his youth, where he spent his formative years.

Early Career and Solo Breakthrough

Crespo first achieved recognition in the mid-1990s as a member of the group Grupo Mania in Puerto Rico. He embarked on a solo career in 1998, releasing his debut album, Suavemente. The album, and its title track, became a significant hit across Latin America and the United States. The single "Suavemente" was particularly successful, earning Crespo the Billboard magazine award for Best Male Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year.

Commercial Success and Chart Performance

Suavemente achieved platinum status in Venezuela and Central America, and gold in Chile. In the United States, the album earned a gold certification for selling over 500,000 copies within its first year of release in 1998. The single "Suavemente" set a record on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart, holding the number one position for six consecutive weeks, a record for a merengue single at the time. The song's broad appeal extended to English-speaking audiences, notably in Miami and New York.

Musical Evolution

While Crespo's debut album was primarily influenced by merengue, his subsequent releases explored a wider range of musical styles, diverging from his initial sound.

Later Releases

Wow Flash! marked Elvis Crespo's third solo album with Sony Music. His album Regresó el Jefe, released on June 5, 2007, featured the single "La Foto Se Me Borró." Crespo dedicated this album to his niece, Wilmarie Agosto Crespo, who passed away in a car accident on March 28, 2007.
