The Egyptian Lover, born Greg Broussard, began his career as a DJ in Lafayette, Louisiana, before relocating to Los Angeles. In 1983, he joined forces with Unique Dreams Entertainment, which soon evolved into the influential collective Uncle Jamm's Army. Together, they organized massive early hip-hop dance parties, drawing crowds of over 10,000 people to venues like the L.A. Sports Arena and locations in Torrance.

His initial foray into recording came in 1983 as a member of The Radio Crew. Later that year, he contributed to "Dial-A-Freak," released by Uncle Jamm's Army. The Egyptian Lover then launched his solo career, releasing the seminal single and club anthem "Egypt, Egypt" in 1984. This was followed by a string of local hits that defined the electro-funk sound, including "And My Beat Goes Boom," "What Is a DJ If He Can't Scratch," "Girls," "You're so Fine," "The Lover," "Sexy Style," "The Alesby Inn," and "Freak a Holic."
