Early Career and Education

Assad's musical journey began in his native Brazil, where he was already performing before his United States debut in New York in 1969. His formal training included seven years of classical guitar study with Monina Tavora, herself a student of the legendary Andrés Segovia. This rigorous education laid the foundation for his accomplished career.

Compositions and Arrangements

Beyond his performing career, Sérgio Assad has made significant contributions as an arranger and composer. He has created numerous transcriptions and arrangements for both solo guitar and guitar duo, notably including works by the iconic Argentine composer Ástor Piazzolla. His arrangements have expanded the repertoire available to guitarists worldwide.

Family and Teaching

Music is a family affair for the Assads. Sérgio's sister, Badi Assad, is also a respected classical guitarist. Since September 2008, Sérgio Assad has shared his extensive knowledge and experience by teaching at The San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
