Formed in 2002, the Ilmiliekki Quartet quickly established themselves as a significant force in Finnish jazz. Within six months of their inception, the ensemble, comprising Verneri Pohjola, Tuomo Prättälä, Olavi Louhivuori, and Antti Lötjönen, triumphed at the Nordic jazz ensemble competition, earning them the title of Young Nordic Jazz Comets.

The quartet's debut album, "March of the Alpha Males," released by TUM Records, garnered critical attention, receiving a nomination for the Jazz Emma, Finland's equivalent of the Grammy Award, for Best Jazz Album of 2003. Further accolades followed in 2004 when the band was recognized as Young Artist of the Year by Finland Festivals. In the same year, trumpeter Verneri Pohjola was individually honored as the Pori Jazz Festival's Young Artist. To cap off a successful year, Ilmiliekki Quartet was awarded the prestigious Teosto Prize by the Finnish Composers Copyright Society at the end of 2004, solidifying their position as leading young talent in Finnish jazz.
