Raphael Merriweathers: The Electronic Music Pioneer
Raphael Merriweathers, also known professionally as M.I.A., embarked on his musical journey at the young age of 16. Already proficient as a drummer, he quickly found himself performing with Top 40 bands, dedicating a decade to a demanding schedule of touring and studio sessions.
Discovery of Electronic Drum Programming
It was during his extensive studio work that Merriweathers discovered the world of electronic drum programming. This revelation marked a turning point, leading him to seek more fulfilling musical avenues beyond the confines of Top 40 performances.
Joining Underground Resistance and Early Releases
In 1998, Raphael Merriweathers joined the influential Detroit techno collective Underground Resistance. Under the moniker M.I.A., he released the track “Schoolcraft Bump” and began performing with the collective's live electronic act, Chaos.
Continued Projects and Current Endeavors
Merriweathers continues to be an active figure in electronic music. He now records under the name Ray 7 and balances his contributions to Underground Resistance productions with session work for Mainor’s electronic soul band, Renaissance. Additionally, he manages his own imprint, ‘Tunnel 7’.
