Kiefer Sutherland, born in London, England, is the son of acclaimed Canadian actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas. With Scottish heritage on both sides, he is also the grandson of Tommy Douglas, a prominent Canadian politician credited with establishing universal healthcare in Canada. Sutherland and his twin sister, Rachel, were born in London while his parents were working there, making him a dual citizen of both Britain and Canada.
His family relocated to Corona, California, but his parents divorced in 1972. In 1975, Sutherland moved with his mother to Toronto. During his formative years, he attended numerous schools in Toronto, including Crescent Town Elementary School and several high schools such as St. Andrew's College and Malvern Collegiate Institute. He also briefly studied at Regina Mundi Catholic College in London, Ontario, and took weekend acting classes. Upon moving to Hollywood to launch his acting career, Sutherland shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2009 that he roomed with Robert Downey Jr. for three years.
