History

Mammoth WVH is the musical endeavor of Wolfgang Van Halen, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. The project emerged with the release of its debut single, "Distance," on November 16, 2020. This track achieved significant success, reaching the number one position on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in February 2021.

Formation and Musical Direction

Mammoth WVH was conceived by Wolfgang Van Halen as a solo project while he was still a member of Van Halen. The band's name is a direct homage to "Mammoth," an early band formed by his father, Eddie Van Halen, and uncle, Alex Van Halen, before the inception of Van Halen. Following the disbandment of Van Halen in 2020, attributed to Eddie Van Halen's passing, Mammoth WVH became Wolfgang's primary focus.

Naming and Creative Process

Wolfgang Van Halen selected the name Mammoth WVH as a nod to his father's foundational band. He has shared that the inspiration stemmed from childhood memories of hearing about his father's early group, finding the name "Mammoth" particularly compelling. Inspired by Eddie Van Halen's multifaceted role in the original band, including serving as lead singer, Wolfgang intended to write, perform, and produce his music independently. He initially considered "Mammoth WVH" but eventually simplified it to "Mammoth" for his own project. He presented the concept to his father, who offered his enthusiastic approval and blessing.

Discography

To date, Mammoth WVH has released two studio albums: the self-titled Mammoth WVH in 2021 and Mammoth II in 2023.
