History
The HU: Mongolian Folk Metal Pioneers
The HU, a Mongolian folk metal band formed in 2016, has carved a unique niche in the global music scene with their distinctive "hunnu rock" sound. The band's name, derived from the Mongol word for "human," reflects their deep connection to their cultural heritage. They skillfully blend traditional Mongolian instrumentation, including the morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) and tovshuur (two-stringed lute), with the powerful resonance of Mongolian throat singing.
Their music often incorporates ancient Mongolian war cries and poetry, drawing inspiration from the Hunnu, an ancient nomadic empire also known in Western culture as the Xiongnu. This fusion of ancient traditions and modern heavy music has captivated audiences worldwide.
Breakthrough Success and Chart Achievements
The HU gained significant international attention in the autumn of 2018 with the release of two YouTube videos: "Yuve Yuve Yu" and "Wolf Totem." By November 2020, these videos had collectively surpassed 100 million views. Their impact on the music charts was equally impressive. On April 11, 2019, "Wolf Totem" soared to the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart, marking a historic moment as The HU became the first Mongolian musical act to top a Billboard chart. "Yuve Yuve Yu" also achieved success, reaching No. 7 on the same chart, while "Wolf Totem" debuted at No. 22 on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart.
Recognition and Global Reach
The band's accomplishments in promoting Mongolian culture were recognized by the highest levels of government. On May 17, 2019, The HU met with Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga, who commended their efforts. Throughout 2019, The HU continued to expand their global footprint, releasing singles like "Shoog Shoog" and "The Great Chinggis Khaan," and embarking on extensive tours across Europe and North America.
Their debut album, The Gereg, released on September 13, 2019, takes its name from a diplomatic passport used during the era of Genghis Khan. The album, released internationally under Eleven Seven Records, further solidified their unique sound. The band also collaborated with notable artists, releasing new versions of their songs featuring Danny Case of From Ashes to New, Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach, and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. Their music has also been featured in popular media, including the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the upcoming horror film The Retaliators.
In recognition of their significant contribution to promoting Mongolian culture globally, The HU was awarded the Order of Genghis Khan, Mongolia's highest state honor, on November 27, 2019. In 2020, the band organized a fundraising concert for COVID-19 relief efforts and announced plans for their second album, slated for release in 2021.
