History
Dry Cleaning
Dry Cleaning is a post-punk band formed in South London in 2017. The group features vocalist Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, bassist Lewis Maynard, and drummer Nick Buxton. Their sound is characterized by a distinctive fusion of motorik rhythms, sharp guitar work, and Shaw's spoken-word delivery, earning them recognition for their unconventional lyrics, understated humor, and minimalist aesthetic.
Initially formed by friends experimenting with instrumental music, the band's direction solidified with the addition of Shaw, a university lecturer and visual artist with no prior band experience. Their first single, "Magic of Meghan," was released in 2019, preceding their well-received EPs, Sweet Princess and Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks.
The band's debut album, New Long Leg, arrived in 2021 to considerable critical praise. Their subsequent release, Stumpwork (2022), further cemented their standing, noted for its observational, collage-style lyrics and innovative post-punk arrangements. Stumpwork received the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package in 2023, acknowledging its distinctive visual design and artwork.
Known for their collaborative songwriting process and introspective themes, Dry Cleaning continues to develop their sound. As of 2025, their third studio album is reportedly in production with producer Cate Le Bon in France.
